The UFC  194 preliminaries impressed me (logo via Wikimedia)

I hardly ever notice UFC in the ratings. I’m not sure if that’s because my eyes are naturally drawn to the baseball, football and hockey numbers or if the UFC numbers have always been so minuscule that they’re rarely ever worth a mention. Well, the UFC got my attention this week.

The UFC 194 preliminaries snagged 358,000 viewers on Saturday to become the day’s third most-watched sporting event. That audience was bigger than all of the curling grand slams, every NBA game and most NHL matches. It wasn’t all good news for mixed martial arts, though. The Ultimate Fighter paled in comparison with 168,000 viewers

In other news, Hockey Night in Canada fell flat on its face on Saturday. As there was only one game in each of the usual early and late game slots, ratings fell dramatically. The early game drew 1.2 million down from the over 1.7 million who tuned in for the early games the week before. With numbers like those, the NFL got close to snagging the top spot for the weekend.
