Canadian TV Ratings: August 31-September 6, 2015

Now that I’m back from hiatus, this is the first time that I’ve really analyzed the ratings in a few weeks. I’ve noticed that while some things are different, some things are definitely the same.

First, what has stayed the same. Around this time last year, The Amazing Race Canada was the nation’s top show followed by MasterChef, and that’s the same now. As like last year, you have Big Brother and some CTV News broadcasts sprinkled in Numeris’ Top Programs chart as well.

Now for the differences: Last year, the Jays weren’t drawing in anywhere near the audience that they are now. For the week of August 31 this year, the Jays pulled in 1,633,000 viewers across every day except Thursday (using whatever crazy math Numeris uses), and I’m betting the Jays stole viewers away from some of the summer’s other big shows.

This time last year The Amazing Race Canada drew nearly 2.9 million viewers and MasterChef drew over 2.3 million. This year, The Amazing Race Canada is down to just over 2.5 million, while MasterChef is down to just over 1.9 million viewers.

Actually, nearly everything on the charts below that aired last summer is down when you compare them to this year’s numbers. It could just be because of the Jays, but what should have the networks shaking in their boots is if people are just defecting to Netflix and YouTube for entertainment. Gosh, I think they’d be shaking in their boots even if they are defecting to their own streaming services (Shomi and Crave), because $4-10 a month surely can’t cover what they’d be losing from advertising revenue, right?
