Canadian TV Ratings [Sports]: September 11-13, 2015

The Blue Jays are pulling in ridiculous numbers on Sportsnet (logo via Wikimedia)

You know that feeling when you return from vacation and you find that everything got turned upside down when you were away? Well, that’s how I feel right now, but in a good way.

When I left the Jays in June, they were drawing less than 500,000 viewers on Sportsnet One and under 800,000 viewers on Sportsnet proper. Today, the Jays are getting very close to attracting two million viewers on Sportsnet. Whoa.

Saturday saw two Jays games, and the latter of the two drew in nearly 1.9 million viewers to become the weekend’s most-watched sporting event. The first Jays game on Saturday wasn’t too far behind with over 1.7 million viewers to become the weekend’s second most-watched sporting event.

Heck, if they continue to pull in those ratings, the Jays can play all day and night until the end of time for all Sportsnet cares. Only the top scripted programs in the country, certain events and sometimes a few hockey games pull in numbers like those.

Elsewhere, Canada seems to love its football. Outside of the Jays, CFL and NFL games took all but one spot on the charts below. So what was the lone non-football or baseball event? It was a FIBA basketball game, of course. It seems ridiculous, but I have a hunch why that happened. I hope to get to it later.

Anyway, for now, check out my charts below and visit Yahoo Sports Canada at the source link for more on the weekend’s top sports.

*There is a possibility that the Tiger-Cats at the Argonauts game didn’t air on TSN5 as TSN’s schedule page list the game as airing at 10 on TSN5 after a NASCAR race with SportsCentre airing at 10:30. It seems more likely that SportsCentre aired after the NASCAR race. TSN could have aired clips from the game for a half-hour, but that doesn’t seem likely.

The numbers above are Numeris’ overnight ratings for sports events on English-language Canadian TV. If any of these games or events were also broadcast on an American network available in Canada, the viewers who watched the American broadcast are not included in the numbers above.
