Canadian TV Ratings [Sports]: June 5-7, 2015

The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup rained on HNIC’s playoffs parade on Saturday (logo via Wikimedia)

After months of hype, the FIFA Women’s World Cup is finally here, and for TSN and CTV, it was quite worth the wait.

The opening game on Saturday drew over 1.6 million to CTV and TSN. But here’s where it gets a bit mind-blowing: The Women’s World Cup opener went up against Hockey Night in Canada’s playoff coverage. Let that sink in: Women’s soccer pulled in over 1.6 million viewers up against an NHL playoffs game. Absolutely crazy, right? It also nearly drew in as many pairs of eyeballs as HNIC with around 230,000 viewers separating the two.

I’m willing to bet that the Women’s World Cup was able to steal some viewers from HNIC considering that Saturday’s playoffs-fuelled HNIC drew roughly as much as HNIC would bring in on a good night during the regular season with games stretched across the CBC and some of the Rogers outlets. Crazy world, eh?
