Canadian TV Ratings: January 5-11, 2015

If you’ve been following the sports ratings posts, it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that the World Juniors topped everything on television for the week of Jan. 5. Even though the World Juniors final was on cable opposed to a major broadcast network (as you might see for some of the bigger sporting events) it still managed to draw nearly six million viewers. That was higher than The Big Bang Theory and even the heavily hyped Golden Globe Awards. Actually, even the World Juniors post-game show clobbered them as well with an audience just over the five million viewer mark.

While the huge World Juniors numbers were expected, I don’t think you could say the same for CBC’s Book of Negroes. It drew nearly two million viewers on Wednesday to easily top the competing shows in its time-slot. Just for comparison’s sake, the People’s Choice Awards attracted 1.5 million on Global and 1.3 million tuned into Saving Hope on CTV.

The ratings oddities didn’t stop there, however. HNIC was MIA on the top 30 chart, but two Saturday NFL Playoffs broadcasts crept onto the chart. However, in true Numeris fashion, they cobbled together two seemingly unrelated games and complicated the whole thing. The chart lists “NFL Playoffs” as airing on CTV from 4:33-8:05 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. That couldn’t be right as the chart also lists CTV as airing the Golden Globe Red Carpet show from 7-8 p.m. on Sunday and the Golden Globe Awards from 8-11:04 p.m. right after.

So I scoured Bell Media’s site to see what really went down that night. It turns out that while the 4:30 p.m. NFL game aired on CTV on Saturday, it aired on TSN on Sunday. I’m not too sure if that was an error or something got mixed up somewhere. In any case, I left it as it appeared on Numeris’ chart for my charts below.
