Canadian TV Ratings [Sports]: January 1-5, 2015

IIHF’s World Juniors crushed everything else on television (logo via Wikimedia)

Canada sure loves the World Juniors. The tournament continued to dominate television over the weekend, and the final attracted an incredible six million viewers to TSN. That’s roughly three times the typical audience of Hockey Night in Canada’s early games.

Canada’s semifinal and quarterfinal World Junior matches impressed as well. Canada’s semifinal game against Slovakia drew 3.9 million, while Canada’s quarterfinal match against Denmark attracted three million.

Those games easily towered over Hockey Night in Canada’s early games, which rebounded from last week and garnered just under two million viewers, up from 900,000. Not having to go up against the World Juniors helped, no doubt, and I bet that the Habs and Leafs featured matches helped as well.

While Hockey Night in Canada made a smooth recovery, Hometown Hockey took a beating. Sunday’s Lighting/Senators game only drew 184,000 to City. I bet that the World Junior Championship was part of the reason why Hometown Hockey garnered such lacklustre ratings.

The World Junior matches were far from the only hot sporting events on. The NCAA bowl games did fairly nicely. As Chris Zelkovich pointed out, this year’s Rose Bowl was “the most-watched university football game ever on TSN.” This week also saw the Winter Classic, which attracted just over a million to the CBC. Zelkovich said it drew the smallest audience to the network in five years, and that it’s “a pretty good indication that the novelty has worn off — no doubt thanks to overexposure.” On top of that, three NFL games attracted a million viewers or more.

It was a huge weekend. Check out the charts below for more or Yahoo! Sports at the source link.
