TORONTO (Sept. 09, 2014) – MTV announced today that, for the first time ever, Canadian artists will be showcased in a “Best Canadian Act” pre-category. The first four Canadian nominees for the 2014 MTV EUROPE MUSIC AWARDS Best Canadian Act category are: indie rockers Arcade Fire, Toronto’s own Drake, notorious pop superstar Justin Bieber, and retro-electro dance starlet Kiesza. The fifth “wild card” nominee will be determined by social media followers. The 2014 MTV EUROPE MUSIC AWARDS air live from The Hydro in Glasgow on Sunday, Nov. 9, exclusively on MTV.
In dozens of regions all over the world, artists vie for local EMA awards, with the winners becoming the nominees for the Best Worldwide Act award. For the first time ever, the five “Best Canadian Act” nominees will vie to become nominees in the Best North American Act, category, which will go on to compete for the Best Worldwide Act award.
This year, for the first time ever, MTV is putting an EMA nomination in the hands of the fans via social media. Music lovers everywhere have the power to help select the fifth, “wild card” nominee for Best Canadian Act via Twitter, using the hashtags #MTVEMA and an artist hashtag. The artist with the most hashtag mentions will become the fifth nominee in the category. Wildcard social voting runs until Sunday, Sept. 14 and on Tuesday, Sept. 16, MTV will announce the final nominees as voted on Twitter. The winners of the local EMA to be announced in the coming weeks.
