Canadian TV Ratings [Sports]: September 5-8, 2014

The NFL is back, but ask the CFL if they care (logo via Wikimedia)

The NFL is back, but it seems that doesn’t matter much for the CFL. This weekend’s top match remained a CFL game, with the same teams as last week’s top match to boot. This weekend’s Roughriders/Blue Bombers game drew 1,107,000, a hair less than the 1,144,000 they attracted last week. Still, that was more than enough for them to run circles around their nearest competitor on Sunday, a 49ers/Cowboys match on CTV, which only had 683,000 viewers. I think you need to stop and take that in for a second: A CFL game on cable beat an NFL game on a major network by well over 400,000 viewers. Crazy, isn’t it?

If that wasn’t enough insanity for one week, the Jays spiked to a viewership north of 800,000 viewers on Friday night, easily beating the Lions/RedBlacks match on TSN. That game only attracted 668,000. I’m not sure why the Jays match did so well, especially considering last week the Jays’ top game was just under 600,000 viewers.

I’m also a bit puzzled as to why the Lions and RedBlacks did so poorly considering that the Lions are typically one of the teams that score the big ratings. I thought the poor ratings may have had something to do with it not airing across all of TSN’s regional feeds. (I know TSN says TSN1, TSN3, TSN4 and TSN5 are national feeds, but let’s get real here: They’re regional feeds available across the country much like the regional Sportsnet channels.) However, according to TSN’s schedule the match aired on all of them so I’m a bit miffed. Zelkovich over at Yahoo! Sports says that the game was one of the worst in the past decade, so I’m going to trust him on that and assume people just tuned out once they saw how badly things were going.

Anyway, for more of the weekend’s top sporting broadcasts, visit Yahoo! Sports at the source link below. (For some reason Zelkovich included Monday on his chart, so I included a Monday chart below.)
