Canadian TV Ratings: June 9-15, 2014

Global/NBC's The Night Shift

The Night Shift appears to be doing well in the ratings (screenshot via globaltv.com)

Probably the biggest surprise this week (besides BBM changing its name, more on that later) was that The Night Shift was the third most watched show on Tuesday. What’s The Night Shift? It’s a medical drama import from NBC and this week it scored 1,085,000 viewers.  That’s well below the second place show for the day, the ever-popular CTV Evening News, which had 1,515,000 viewers. The Night Shift just edged out last week Wednesday’s third most popular show NCIS by under 10,000 viewers. Talk about a tight race. NBC is scoring okay numbers stateside for The Night Shift (6,702,000 viewers for the June 10th episode), so I wonder if we’re looking at a renewal here.

Elsewhere this week, the NHL Finals wrapped up while the FIFA World Cup kicked off. For this week’s overnight sports numbers, check out this post and this post. The NHL Finals appeared to dent MasterChef‘s ratings this week as it lost 264,000 viewers, however America’s Got Talent lucked out on Tuesday and didn’t have to deal with hockey or soccer. America’s Got Talent gained 211,000 viewers from last week. If people watched America’s Got Talent on the NBC feed that might explain why The Night Shift is doing so well in Canada.

Like MasterChefSo You Think You Can Dance and The Big Bang Theory saw dips from last week, while hockey and soccer made it possible for the CBC to sweep Friday.

The top-30 chart is available as always at the source link below, however, you may notice a new name. BBM Canada is now Numeris, a name that means… I’m not sure. I wonder if they changed their name because they were sick of being mistaken for Blackberry Messenger. Blackberry is hurting though, chances are if they held out a bit longer Blackberry would finally implode and the name would be theirs. Anyway, Numeris it is unless the rebranding effort flops and I wind up calling it by its old name. (I’m looking at you Hudson’s Bay.)
