Canadian TV Ratings [Sports]: May 22-26, 2014

Sportsnet 360 now simulcasts some of Sportsnet One’s Jays games (logo via Wikimedia)

When you take a look at the ratings charts below you may notice that Rogers has started to repurpose some of its games over multiple Sportsnet stations, and even in one case their broadcast network City. Well, that sure is an easy way to boost ratings.

Take for example the Friday Jays games that were previously exclusive to Sportsnet One. Rogers decided to share that match with Sportsnet 360, and of course, ratings jumped from last week when the Friday game only aired on Sportsnet One. Last week it pulled in 358,000, this week Friday with the match also airing on Sportsnet 360 it had a viewership of 494,000. That’s more than the Jays game against the Rangers on Sunday that aired on Sportsnet proper. That game only had a viewership of 436,000.

Rogers pulled the same stunt with the Jays game on Saturday. While last week’s game had 740,000 viewers on the regional Sportsnet channels, this week’s Saturday Jays game only saw 484,000 viewers. Granted, last week’s game had a larger than average viewership. In fact, I’d be surprised if the Jays would’ve been able to pull in the same numbers even if it was airing on Sportsnet proper. So take that into consideration.

Sportsnet had a very good week overall, however. They took seven of the week’s top ten sports broadcasts with the CBC taking the remaining three. TSN’s top broadcast was a Pacers and Heat game on Saturday that only pulled in 186,000. The game took the 13th spot on the weekly chart. (My chart covers the top 10 sports broadcasts as well as the top five games per day, but check out Yahoo! Sports for the full weekly list.)

Elsewhere on the chart, the CHL match on Friday saw nearly 100,000 more viewers than last week Friday’s game. The PGA matches this week were both down from the ones broadcasted on Global last week. The third round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational drew 226,000 this week Saturday, while 260,000 tuned in to the Byron Nelson Championship’s third round last week Saturday. The final round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational actually tied the third round pulling in exactly 226,000 viewers while the final round of the Byron Nelson Championship jumped to 390,000 last Sunday.
