Canadian TV Ratings [Sports]: April 18-22, 2014

The Canadiens are pulling in huge ratings (logo via WikiMedia)

I’ve decided to try my hand at sports ratings. I’m debating whether to make this a regular feature of the site or not. I guess it depends on how much time I have on my hands and if you guys like it.

The numbers I have here are BBM’s overnight ratings for the past weekend via Yahoo! Sports and I’ve organized them a lot like the way I organize the regular general TV ratings. The first column has the rank for the day, the following column covers the rank for the week, then you’ll get the game, with the league or sport in brackets, the network and then finally the viewers. Here’s hoping it gives you a bit more insight, regardless if you’re a sports fan, TV junkie or both.

Anyway, by looking at the numbers you can see why Sportsnet was so desperate for the hockey rights. TSN and CBC hogged the top ten sports broadcasts for the week and they were all hockey games. Actually, Sportsnet’s top game was the Blue Jays at the Indians on Sunday with only 570,000 watching, which put it in 14th place for the week. Comparably TSN’s top broadcast was the Red Wings vs. the Bruins with 1,089,000 tuning in, which helped it take sixth place for the week.

Also, check out Yahoo! Sports full list of the top 25 English sports broadcasts at the source link below. Not making the top 25 is Saturday’s Toronto vs. Dallas Major League Soccer game on Sportsnet One that pulled in an anemic 35,000 viewers, which is kinda just sad.

*Yahoo! Sports has this down as the Avalanche at the Penguins, but I believe that is an error, likely that is supposed to be the Blue Jackets and the Penguins. Fun Fact: According to TSN the Penguins and Blue Jackets have never met before in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
