The revival of Speakers Corner appears to be an effort by City to make its news division, CityNews, more accessible and engaging. Other efforts include enacting a text-to-vote feature during City’s broadcast of the debate so viewers at home can vote on who is winning the debate (God help them if Ford Nation hijacks the vote.) and of course Twitter and CityNews’ website will play a role.
City is bringing back the iconic Speakers Corner, just in time for Toronto’s first mayoral debate on March 26th. Right now, there aren’t too many details but it sounds like Speakers Corner will exist exclusively online on CityNews.ca and 680News.com. So, don’t expect a Speakers Corner’s booth (but with smartphones in every pocket these days who needs a booth?) or a Speakers Corner television program, at least not yet.
